As part of the BloxHub Summer School on Urban Resilience 2020, a joint Arup and The Resilience Shift team will host an Applied-Knowledge Module starting on Monday 15 June 2020.
For those taking part, the module is on city systems’ interdependency digital-mapping and programme design for resilience. It is developed with the aim of helping to understand and apply complex systems thinking in urban contexts.
The module will aim to deliver the below learning outcomes:
• Introduction to key concepts that help in the understanding of complex urban systems
• Training on a social network analysis as a method to articulate complex interdependencies in urban areas using www.kumu.io
• Application of complex systems thinking to develop one or more action areas for integrated urban planning
The course takes place over 2 days with an assignment, and is spread between 15-18 June 2020. It is being taught by Arup’s Pasquale Capizzi, Sachin Bhoite and Aine Ni bhreasail, in partnership with The Resilience Shift. On the first taught day, the participants will focus on understanding and mapping interdependencies in complex city systems. This introduces the key concepts that help in the understanding of complex urban systems and how you can make sense of complexity: from mapping to progamming. They also look at how city-systems interdependencies can be explored through cascades of failure and failure mechanisms.
Moving from system analysis to programming they will explore practical case studies of applied analysis including Urban Health Participatory Systems Analysis, infrastructure resilience, and Urban Resilience Systems Assessment at national scale. They will work with a live demonstration of interdependency analysis using the kumu digital tool. On the final day they will continue work on and presentations of their group assignments. The module will move on to the design of integrated programmes, and the routes from programme design to implementation.
The BloxHub Summer School on Urban Resilience 2020 , hosted by SDU, the University of Southern Denmark, aims to provide multi-disciplinary knowledge and perspectives on the different global and local challenges for urban resilience in the Global South and North. The training is organized as a series of lectures and work in small groups to respond to a problem based challenge. The participants will gain necessary competencies to develop informed policies, strategies, plans and solutions for urban resilience.
